Rob Knochenhauer is the Director of Regulatory Affairs for Censys Technologies and helps Censys’ clients to secure Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operational waivers (relief from § 107.31) for a variety of use cases. In addition, Rob brings an array of industry experiences to support Censys’ strategic goals by working in concert with Censys’ engineering team and the FAA to develop the next generation of RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems) to perform more complex BVLOS operations for Censys’ clients. Starting his career as a certificated Airframe & Powerplant aircraft mechanic, Rob transitioned into engineering where he spent fifteen years supporting and ultimately leading the development of numerous UxS (ground, sea & air with Foster-Miller and Aurora Flight Sciences). In recent years, Rob has been on the leading edge of developing a pathway to integrate RPAS operations into the NAS. Prior to his role with Censys, Rob supported MassDOT’s RPAS program by developing strategy for complex RPAS operations (corridor BVLOS) and Rob started the commercial RPAS chapter of his career as the director of flight operations for GreenSight (where he secured the first remote operation BVLOS waiver under Part 107 in 2017). Rob also works to help define the pathway for unlocking complex RPAS ops for the community by contributing to Working Group WK62669, ASTM DAA Test Methods (under F38).
